OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine the effect of the Mediterranean diet (MeDi) on cognitive decline among the Chinese elderly with a 3-year follow-up. METHODS: This study is divided into two waves: wave-1 January 2019 to June 2019 (n = 2313); wave-2 January 2022 to March 2022 (n = 1648). MeDi scores were calculated from the Mediterranean Diet Adherence Screener (MEDAS), with the scoring of low compliance (0-6 points) and high compliance (7-14 points). The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) was used to assess cognitive function. An MMSE score dropping ≥ 2 points from baseline was defined as cognitive decline. The relationships between MeDi score and cognitive decline were analyzed by linear regression models or Binary logistic regression. RESULTS: During the 3-year follow-up, 23.8% of patients exhibited cognitive decline. The study revealed a significant difference in MMSE score changes between low and high MeDi adherence groups (p < 0.001). MeDi score was negatively correlated with cognitive deterioration (ß = -0.020, p = 0.026). MeDi score was only negatively associated with cognitive decline in the female subgroup aged ≥65 years (ß = -0.034, p = 0.033). The food beans (OR = 0.65, 95%CI:0.51, 0.84), fish (OR = 0.72, 95%CI:0.54, 0.97), and cooked vegetables (OR = 0.68, 95%CI:0.53, 0.84) were protective factors for cognitive decline. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that greater adherence to the MeDi is linked to a reduced risk of cognitive decline in elderly people. However, this is found only in women who are 65 years old or older. It also found long-term adherence to beans, fish, and vegetables are more effective in improving cognitive function.

There has been interested in the microRNAs' roles in pancreatic cancer (PC) cell biology, particularly in regulating pathways related to tumorigenesis. The study aimed to explore the hub miRNAs in PC and underlying mechanisms by bioinformatics and fundamental experiments. RNA datasets collected from the Gene Expression Omnibus were analysed to find out differentially expressed RNAs (DERNAs). The miRNA-mRNA and protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks were built. The clinicopathological features and expressions of hub miRNAs and hub mRNAs were explored. Dual-luciferase reporter gene assay was performed to assess the interaction between microRNA and target gene. RT-qPCR and western blot were employed to explore RNA expression. The roles of RNA were detected by CCK-8 test, wound healing, transwell, and flow cytometry experiment. We verified 40 DEmiRNAs and 1613 DEmRNAs, then detected a total of 69 final functional mRNAs (FmRNAs) and 23 DEmiRNAs. In the miRNA-mRNA networks, microRNA-130b (miR-130b) was the hub RNA with highest degrees. Clinical analysis revealed that miR-130b was considerably lower expressed in cancerous tissues than in healthy ones, and patients with higher-expressed miR-130b had a better prognosis. Mechanically, miR-130b directly targeted MET in PC cells. Cell functional experiments verified that miR-130b suppressed cell proliferation, migration, promoted apoptosis, and inhibited the PI3K/Akt pathway by targeting MET in PC cells. Our findings illustrated the specific molecular mechanism of miR-130b regulating PC progress. The miR-130b/MET axis may be an alternative target in the therapeutic intervention of PC and provide an opportunity to deepen our understanding of the pathogenesis of PC.

Ultralow temperature-tolerant electronic skins (e-skins) can endow polar robots with tactile feedback for exploring in extremely cold polar environments. However, it remains a challenge to develop e-skins that enable sensitive touch sensation and self-healing at ultralow temperatures. Herein, we describe the development of a sensitive robotic hand e-skin that can stretch, self-heal, and sense at temperatures as low as -78 °C. The elastomeric substrate of this e-skin is based on poly(dimethylsiloxane) supramolecular polymers and multistrength dynamic H-bonds, in particular with quadruple H-bonding motifs (UPy). The structure-performance relationship of the elastomer at ultralow temperatures is investigated. The results show that elastomers with side-chain UPy units exhibit higher stretchability (∼3257%) and self-healing efficiency compared to those with main-chain UPy units. This is attributed to the lower binding energy variation and lower potential well. Based on the elastomer with side-chain UPy and man-made electric ink, a sensitive robotic hand e-skin for usage at -78 °C is constructed to precisely sense the shape of objects and specific symbols, and its sensation can completely self-recover after being damaged. The findings of this study contribute to the concept of using robotic hands with e-skins in polar environments that make human involvement limited, dangerous, or impossible.

Diabetes is a global public health problem, and the impact of air pollutants on type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has attracted people's attention. This study aimed to assess the association of short-term exposure to six criteria air pollutants with T2DM outpatient visits in Lanzhou, China. We collected data on daily outpatient visits for T2DM, daily meteorological data and hourly concentrations of air pollutants in Lanzhou from 2013 to 2019. An over-dispersed passion generalized addictive model combined with a distributed lag non-linear model was applied to estimate the associations and stratified analyses were performed by gender, age, and season. The models were fitted with different lag structures, including single lag days from the current to the previous seven days (lag0 to lag7) and moving average concentrations over seven lag days (lag01 to lag07). A positive association between multiple air pollutants, especially PM2.5, NO2, O38h and CO and hospital outpatient visits for T2DM was observed. The largest association between T2DM outpatient visits and PM2.5 was observed at lag06 (RR 1.013, 95% CI: 1.001, 1.027), NO2 at lag03 (RR 1.034, 95% CI: 1.018, 1.050), O38h at lag05 (RR 1.012, 95% CI: 1.001, 1.023) for an increase of 10 µg m-3 and CO at lag03 (RR 1.084, 95% CI: 1.029, 1.142) for an increase of 1 mg m-3 in the concentrations. In addition, people aged <65 and males are more susceptible, and air pollutants have a greater impact on the cold season. This study showed that although the air pollution in Lanzhou was improved, there was still a statistical correlation between air pollution exposure and T2DM outpatient visits. Therefore, the local government still needs to strengthen the control of air pollution and enhance the protection awareness of the diabetic population through education and publicity.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the clinical significance and risk factors of postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) after post-pancreatectomy acute pancreatitis (PPAP) in patients who underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD). SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: PPAP has been recognized as a critical factor in the pathophysiology of POPF after PD. METHODS: A total of 817 consecutive patients who underwent elective PD between January 2020 and June 2022 were included. PPAP and POPF were defined in accordance with the International Study Group for Pancreatic Surgery (ISGPS) definitions. Multivariate logistic analyses were performed to investigate the risk factors for POPF. Comparisons between PPAP-associated POPF and non-PPAP-associated POPF were made to further characterize this intriguing complication. RESULTS: Overall, 159 (19.5%) patients developed POPF after PD, of which 73 (45.9%) occurred following PPAP, and the remaining 86 (54.1%) had non-PPAP-associated POPF. Patients with PPAP-associated POPF experienced significantly higher morbidity than patients without POPF. Multivariate analyses revealed distinct risk factors for each POPF type. For PPAP-associated POPF, independent risk factors included estimated blood loss >200 mL (OR 1.93), MPD ≤3 cm (OR 2.88), and soft pancreatic texture (OR 2.01), largely overlapping with FRS (Fistula Risk Score) elements. On the other hand, non-PPAP-associated POPF was associated with age >65 years (OR 1.95), male (OR 2.10), and MPD ≤3 cm (OR 2.57). Notably, among patients with PPAP, the incidence of POPF consistently hovered around 50% regardless of the FRS stratification. CONCLUSIONS: PPAP-associated POPF presents as a distinct pathophysiology in the development of POPF after PD, potentially opening doors for future prevention strategies targeting the early postoperative period.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease characterized by progressive erosion of the articular cartilage and inflammation. Mesenchymal stem cells' (MSCs) transplantation in OA treatment is emerging, but its clinical application is still limited by the low efficiency in oriented differentiation. In our study, to improve the therapeutic efficiencies of MSCs in OA treatment by carbonic anhydrase IX (CA9) siRNA (siCA9)-based inflammation regulation and Kartogenin (KGN)-based chondrogenic differentiation, the combination strategy of MSCs and the nanomedicine codelivering KGN and siCA9 (AHK-CaP/siCA9 NPs) was used. In vitro results demonstrated that these NPs could improve the inflammatory microenvironment through repolarization of M1 macrophages to the M2 phenotype by downregulating the expression levels of CA9 mRNA. Meanwhile, these NPs could also enhance the chondrogenesis of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) by upregulating the pro-chondrogenic TGF-ß1, ACAN, and Col2α1 mRNA levels. Moreover, in an advanced OA mouse model, compared with BMSCs alone group, the lower synovitis score and OARSI score were found in the group of BMSCs plus AHK-CaP/siCA9 NPs, suggesting that this combination approach could effectively inhibit synovitis and promote cartilage regeneration in OA progression. Therefore, the synchronization of regulating the inflammatory microenvironment through macrophage reprogramming (CA9 gene silencing) and promoting MSCs oriented differentiation through a chondrogenic agent (KGN) may be a potential strategy to maximize the therapeutic efficiency of MSCs for OA treatment.

Biodegradable plastic bags (BPBs), meant for eco-friendly, often inadequately degrade in compost, leading to microplastic pollution. In this study, the effect of Fenton-like reaction with Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NMs) on the plastisphere microorganisms' evolution and the BPBs' aging mechanism was revealed by co-composting of food waste with BPBs for 40 days. The establishment of the Fenton-like reaction was confirmed, with the addition of Fenton-like reagent treatments resulting in an increase of 57.67% and 37.75% in H2O2 levels during the composting, compared to the control group. Moreover, the structural characterization reveals that increasing oxygen content continuously generates reactive free radicals on the surface, leading to the formation of oxidative cavities. This process results in random chain-breaking, significantly reducing molecular weights by 39.27% and 38.81%, thus showcasing a deep-seated transformation in the plastic's molecular structure. Furthermore, the microbial network suggested that the Fenton-like reaction enriched plastisphere keystone species, thus accelerating the BPBs' aging. Additionally, the Fenton-like reaction improved compost maturity and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. These results reveal the bio-chemical mechanisms of BPBs aging and random chain-breaking by the Fenton-like reaction, under alternating oxidative/anoxic conditions of composting and provide a new insight to resolve the BPBs' pollutions.

FOLFOX regimen, composed of folinic acid, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and oxaliplatin (OXP), has been used as clinical standard therapeutic regimen in treatments of colorectal cancer (CRC) and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). To further improve its therapeutic outcomes, FOLFOX was combined with anti-PD-1 antibody to form an advanced chemo-immune combination strategy, which has been proven more efficient in controlling cancer progression and prolonging patients' survival in various clinical trials. However, bad tumor accumulation, relative high toxicity, numerous treatment cycles with high fees and low compliance as well as drug resistance seriously limit the prognosis of FOLFOX regimen. The "all-in-one" formulations, which could precisely delivery multidrug regimen into tumor sites and cells, showed a promising application prospect for targeted drug delivery as well as reducing side effects. However, the design and preparation of the "all-in-one" formulation with high drug encapsulation efficiencies for all drugs was still challenging. Herein, a lipid core-shell nanoparticle codelivery platform was designed for simultaneous encapsulation of variant FOLFOX composed of miriplatin (MiPt), 5-Fluoro-2'-deoxyuridine 5'-monophosphate (FdUMP), calcium folinate (CF) and PD-L1 siRNA (siPD-L1) with high efficiencies, and their synergistic anti-tumor mechanisms were studied, respectively. MiPt, a precursor of OXP, was validated capable of inducing efficient immunogenic cell death (ICD) in this work. Additionally, ICD-mediated release of damage associated molecular patterns functionalized synergistically with PD-L1 silence by siPD-L1 to overcome chemoresistance, reverse suppressive tumor microenvironment and recruit more CD8+ T cells. FdUMP, as the intracellular active form of 5-FU, could induce large amounts of reactive oxygen species to enhance the ICD. CF worked as the sensitizer of FdUMP. The enhanced long-term anti-tumor effect of the prepared "all-in-one" formulation compared to free drug regimen and other controls, was verified in heterotopic CRC mice models and ESCC mice models, providing new thoughts for researchers and showing a promising prospect of translation into clinical applications.

Tannic acid (TA), as a stabilizing agent, was successfully utilized to establish blue-emitting copper nanoclusters (TA-Cu NCs) on the basis of a facile chemical reduction preparation method. Characterization results proved successful synthesis of TA-Cu NCs with uniform size and excellent stability. TA-Cu NCs exhibited a blue emission wavelength at 431 nm when excited at 364 nm. Interestingly, the as-prepared TA-Cu NCs were selectively quenched by furazolidone based on static quenching. In addition, this analysis platform for furazolidone detection had an excellent linear range from 0.5 to 120 µM with a detection limit of 0.074 µM (S/N = 3). Furthermore, the accuracy of this sensing method was successfully confirmed by detecting furazolidone in bovine serum samples, indicating that TA-Cu NCs had bright application prospects.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to determine the association between the urinary protein-to-creatinine ratio (UPCR) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression in a cohort study, and to determine whether body mass index (BMI) modifies this association. METHODS: The study population consisted of 856 hypertensive patients with CKD stages 2-5, enrolled between 2010 and 2011 in Japan. Generalized linear models with a logit link were used to evaluate the independent and combined effects of the UPCR and BMI on CKD progression RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 25 months, 242 patients developed CKD progression during follow-up. A notably higher risk of CKD progression was found in participants in tertiles 2 [odds ratio (OR): 5.46, 95% confidence interval (95% CI): 2.49-11.99] and 3 (OR 27.74, 95% CI 12.34-62.38) comparing with tertiles 1 for UPCR levels. Moreover, an interaction was found between UPCR and BMI on CKD progression (P for interaction = 0.006). Participants in both the highest tertile of UPCR and overweight (UPCR ≥ 248.9 mg/mmol and BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2) had a 45.59-times higher risk of CKD progression compared with those in the lowest tertile of UPCR and nonoverweight (UPCR < 36.2 mg/mmol and BMI < 25 kg/m2) CONCLUSIONS: The present study demonstrates that the combination of elevated UPCR and BMI may contribute to an increased risk of CKD progression.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of perioperative dexamethasone on postoperative complications after pancreaticoduodenectomy. BACKGROUND: The glucocorticoid dexamethasone has been shown to improve postoperative outcomes in surgical patients, but its effects on postoperative complications after pancreaticoduodenectomy are unclear. METHODS: This multicenter, double-blind, randomized controlled trial was conducted in four Chinese high-volume pancreatic centers. Adults undergoing elective pancreaticoduodenectomy were randomized to receive either 0.2 mg/kg dexamethasone or a saline placebo as an intravenous bolus within 5 minutes after anesthesia induction. The primary outcome was the Comprehensive Complication Index (CCI) score within 30 days after the operation, analyzed using the modified intention-to-treat principle. RESULTS: Among 428 patients for eligibility, 300 participants were randomized and 265 were included in the modified intention-to-treat analyses. 134 patients received dexamethasone and 131 patients received a placebo. The mean (SD) CCI score was 14.0 (17.5) in the dexamethasone group and 17.9 (20.3) in the placebo group (mean difference, -3.8; 95% CI, -8.4 to 0.7; P=0.100). The incidence of major complications (Clavien-Dindo grade ≥III) (12.7% vs. 16.0%, risk ratio 0.79; 95% CI, 0.44 to 1.43; P=0.439) and postoperative pancreatic fistula (25.4% vs. 31.3%, risk ratio 0.81; 95% CI, 0.55 to 1.19; P=0.286) were not significantly different between the two groups. In the stratum of participants with a main pancreatic duct ≤3 mm (n=202), the CCI score was significantly lower in the dexamethasone group (mean difference, -6.4; 95% CI, -11.2 to -1.6; P=0.009). CONCLUSION: Perioperative dexamethasone did not significantly reduce postoperative complications within 30 days after pancreaticoduodenectomy.

BACKGROUND: Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) has a high mortality rate and is the most common indication for heart transplantation. Our study sought to develop a multiparametric nomogram to assess individualized all-cause mortality or heart transplantation (ACM/HTx) risk in DCM patients. METHODS: The present study is a retrospective cohort study. The demographic, clinical, blood test, and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMRI) data of DCM patients in the tertiary center (Fuwai Hospital) were collected. The primary endpoint was ACM/HTx. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) Cox regression model was applied for variable selection. Multivariable Cox regression was used to develop a nomogram. The concordance index (C-index), area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), calibration curve, and decision curve analysis (DCA) were used to evaluate the performance of the nomogram. RESULTS: A total of 218 patients were included in the present study. They were randomly divided into a training cohort and a validation cohort. The nomogram was established based on eight variables, including mid-wall late gadolinium enhancement, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, left ventricular ejection fraction, left ventricular end-diastolic diameter, left ventricular end-diastolic volume index, free triiodothyronine, and N-terminal pro-B type natriuretic peptide. The AUCs regarding 1-year, 3-year, and 5-year ACM/HTx events were 0.859, 0.831, and 0.840 in the training cohort and 0.770, 0.789, and 0.819 in the validation cohort, respectively. The calibration curve and DCA showed good accuracy and clinical utility of the nomogram. CONCLUSIONS: We established and validated a circulating biomarker- and CMRI-based nomogram that could provide a personalized prediction of ACM/HTx for DCM patients, which might help risk stratification and decision-making in clinical practice.

Microbial contamination is the principal factor in the deterioration of postharvest storage quality in grapes. To mitigate this issue, we explored a synergistic treatment which combines ultrasound (US) and slightly acidic electrolyzed water (SAEW), and rigorously compared with conventional water cleaning (CW), exclusive US treatment, and standalone SAEW treatment. The US + SAEW treatment proved to be markedly superior in reducing total bacterial, mold & yeast counts on grapes. Specifically, it achieved reductions of 2.23 log CFU/g and 2.76 log CFU/g, respectively, exceeding the efficiencies of SAEW (0.78, 0.75), US (0.58, 0.65), and CW (0.24, 0.46). The efficacy of this synergistic treatment is attributed to the ultrasound removal of the wax layer on grape skins, which transitions the skin from hydrophobic to hydrophilic. This alteration increases the contact area between the grape surface and SAEW, thereby enhancing the antimicrobial efficacy of SAEW. From a physicochemical quality standpoint, the US + SAEW treatment exhibited multiple advantages. It not only minimized weight loss, color deviations, polyphenol oxidase activity and malondialdehyde synthesis in comparison to CW-treated samples but also preserved firmness, sugar-acid ratio and the activities of key enzymes including phenylalanine ammonia-lyase, superoxide dismutase and catalase, and thus maintaining high levels of total phenolics, total ascorbic acid, total anthocyanins, and antioxidants. Consequently, US + SAEW treatment put off the times of decay onset in grapes by 12 days, outperforming both SAEW (8) and US (4) in comparison to CW. These results highlight the potential of US + SAEW as an effective strategy for maintaining grape quality during their postharvest storage period.

Nitrophenols have received extensive attention due to their strong light-absorbing ability in the near-ultraviolet-visible region, which could be influenced by the atmospheric processes of nitrophenols. However, our knowledge and understanding of the formation and evolution of nitrophenols are still in the nascent stages. In the present study, the mixing states of four mononitrophenol particles (i.e., nitrophenol, methynitrophenol, nitrocatechol, and methoxynitrophenol), and one nitropolycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon particles (i.e., nitronaphthol (NN)) were investigated using a single-particle aerosol mass spectrometer (SPAMS) in November 2019 in Qingdao, China. The results showed, for the first time, that mononitrophenols and NN exhibit different mixing states and diurnal variations. Four mononitrophenols were internally mixed well with each other, and with organic acids, nitrates, potassium, and naphthalene. The diurnal variation in the number fraction of mononitrophenols presented two peaks at 07:00 to 09:00 and 18:00 to 20:00, and a valley at noon. Atmospheric environmental conditions, including NO2, O3, relative humidity, and temperature, can significantly influence the diurnal variation of mononitrophenols. Multiple linear regression and random forest regression models revealed that the main factors controlling the diurnal variation of mononitrophenols were photochemical reactions during the day and aqueous-phase reactions during the night. Unlike mononitrophenols, about 62-83% of NN were internally mixed with [NH4]+ and [H(NO3)2]-, but not with organic acids and potassium. The diurnal variation of NN was also different from that of mononitrophenols, generally increased from 17:00 to 10:00 and then rapidly decreaed from 11:00 to 16:00. These results imply that NN may have sources and atmospheric processes that are different from mononitrophenols. We speculate that this is mostly controlled by photochemical reactions and mixing with [NH4]+, which may influence the diurnal variation of NN in the ambient particles; however, this requires further confirmation. These findings extend our current understanding of the atmospheric formation and evolution of nitrophenols.

BACKGROUND: Recovery from a foot ulcer is compromised in a diabetic status, due to the impaired tissue microenvironment that consists of altered inflammation, angiogenesis and fibrosis. Phenotypic alterations in both macrophages and fibroblasts have been detected in the diabetic wound. Recently, a fibroblast subpopulation that expresses high matrix metalloproteinase 1 (MMP1), MMP3, MMP11 and Chitinase-3-Like Protein 1 (CHI3L1) was associated with a successful diabetic wound healing. However, it is not known whether these healing-associated fibroblasts are regulated by macrophages. METHODS AND RESULTS: We used bioinformatic tools to analyze selected public databases on normal and diabetic skin from patients, and identified genes significantly altered in diabetes. In a mouse model for diabetic wound healing, we detected not only a loss of the spatiotemporal changes in interleukin 1ß (IL1ß), IL6, IL10 and vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A) in wound macrophages, but also a compromised expression of MMP1, MMP3, MMP11, CHI3L1 and VEGF-A in healing-associated wound fibroblasts in a diabetic status. Co-culture with diabetic macrophages significantly reduced the expression of MMP1, MMP3, MMP11, CHI3L1 and VEGF-A in fibroblasts from non-diabetic wound. Co-culture with non-diabetic macrophages or diabetic macrophages supplied with IL6 significantly increased the expression of MMP1, MMP3, MMP11, CHI3L1 and VEGF-A in fibroblasts from diabetic wound. Moreover, macrophage-specific expression of IL6 significantly improved wound healing and angiogenesis in diabetic mice. CONCLUSIONS: Macrophages may induce the activation of wound-healing-associated fibroblasts, while the defective macrophages in diabetes may be corrected with IL6 treatment as a promising therapy for diabetic foot disease.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have recently drawn intense attention due to their potential applications in photocatalysis. Herein, we report a multifunctional COF which consists of triphenylamine (TPA) and 2,2'-bipyridine (2, 2'-bipy) entities. The obtained TAPA-BPy-COF is a heterogeneous photocatalyst and can efficiently catalyze the oxidative coupling of thiols to disulfides. In addition, TAPA-BPy-COF can be further metalated by Pd(II) via 2,2'-bipy-metal coordination. The generated Pd@TAPA-BPy-COF can highly promote photocatalytic synthesis of 3-cyanopyridines via cascade addition/cyclization of arylboronic acids with γ-ketodinitriles in heterogeneous way. This work has demonstrated the way for the rational design and preparation of more efficient photoactive COFs for photocatalysis.

Desiccation is typically fatal, but a small number of land plants have evolved vegetative desiccation tolerance (VDT), allowing them to dry without dying through a process called anhydrobiosis. Advances in sequencing technologies have enabled the investigation of genomes for desiccation-tolerant plants over the past decade. However, a dedicated and integrated database for these valuable genomic resources has been lacking. Our prolonged interest in VDT plant genomes motivated us to create the "Drying without Dying" database, which contains a total of 16 VDT-related plant genomes (including 10 mosses) and incorporates 10 genomes that are closely related to VDT plants. The database features bioinformatic tools, such as blast and homologous cluster search, sequence retrieval, Gene Ontology term and metabolic pathway enrichment statistics, expression profiling, co-expression network extraction, and JBrowser exploration for each genome. To demonstrate its utility, we conducted tailored PFAM family statistical analyses, and we discovered that the drought-responsive ABA transporter AWPM-19 family is significantly tandemly duplicated in all bryophytes but rarely so in tracheophytes. Transcriptomic investigations also revealed that response patterns following desiccation diverged between bryophytes and angiosperms. Combined, the analyses provided genomic and transcriptomic evidence supporting a possible divergence and lineage-specific evolution of VDT in plants. The database can be accessed at http://desiccation.novogene.com. We expect this initial release of the "Drying without Dying" plant genome database will facilitate future discovery of VDT genetic resources.

In order to study the genetics of local adaptation in all main deserts of northwest China, whole genomes of 169 individuals were resequenced, which covers 20 populations of Zygophyllum loczyi (Zygophyllales: Zygophylaceae). We describe more than 15 million single nucleotide polymorphisms and numerous InDels. The expected heterozygosity and PIC values associated with local adaptation varied significantly across biogeographic regions. Variation in environmental factors contributes largely to the population genetic structure of Z. loczyi. Bayesian analysis performed with STRUCTURE defined four genetic clusters, while the results of principle component analysis were similar. Our results shows that the Qaidam Desert group appears to be diverging into two branches characterized by significant geographic separation and gene flow with two neighboring deserts. Geological data assume that it is possible that the Taklamakan Desert was the original distribution site, and Z. loczyi could have migrated later on and expanded within other desert areas. The above findings provide insights into the processes involved in biogeography, phylogeny, and differentiation within the northwest deserts of China.

Rapid formation of the CO2 hydrate can be significantly induced by the gaseous thermodynamic promoter 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane(R134a) due to the mild phase equilibrium conditions, although the formation mechanism and dynamic behavior are not clear. Therefore, a visual experimental system was developed to study the effects of different concentrations of R134a on the induction time, gas consumption, and growth morphology of the CO2 hydrate. At the same time, the combined effects under stirring and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) systems were also studied. In addition, visualization and experimental model diagrams were combined to explain the fast formation mechanism of the R134a/CO2 hydrate. The results show that the CO2 hydrate average conversion rate was increased by more than 63% with the addition of mixed trace R134a(7%). A special phenomenon is found that two temperature peaks appear on the hydrate formation temperature curve, corresponding to two different stages of hydrate formation when stirring or SDS is added to the mixed gas reaction system. Furthermore, the gas consumption in stirring and SDS systems increases by 9 and 44%, respectively. Finally, it is also found that the R134a/CO2 mixed hydrate formed under the action of SDS has a "capillary" mechanism, which provides a gas-liquid phase exchange channel and a large number of nucleation sites for CO2 hydrate, thus promoting the formation of CO2 hydrate. This paper provides a novel, simple, and efficient method for CO2 hydrate gas storage technology.

Amine determination is crucial to our daily life, including the prevention of pollution, the treatment of certain disorders, and the evaluation of food quality. Herein, a mixed-linkage donor-acceptor covalent organic framework (named DSE-COF) was first constructed by the polymerization between 2,4-dihydroxybenzene-1,3,5-tricarbaldehyde (DTA) and 4,4'-(benzo[c][1,2,5]selenadiazole-4,7-diyl)dianiline (SEZ). DSE-COF displayed superior turn-on fluorescent responses to primary, secondary, and tertiary aliphatic amines, such as cadaverine, isopropylamine, sec-butylamine, cyclohexylamine, hexamethylenediamine, di-n-butylamine, and triethylamine in absolute acetonitrile than other organic species. Further experiments and theoretical calculations demonstrated that the combination of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) and photoinduced electron transfer (PET) effects between the DSE-COF and aliphatic amines resulted in enhanced fluorescence. Credibly, DSE-COF can quantitatively detect cadaverine content in actual pork samples with satisfactory results. In addition, DSE-COF-based test papers could rapidly monitor cadaverine from real pork samples, manifesting the potential application of COFs in food quality inspection.
